Gone by Julie Elizabeth Powell – Review

After Charley dies in her office chair, how is it that she finds herself propelled into the mysterious world of Avalon?

Upon encountering an essence, which insists is her daughter – the one she knows she left behind – insanity battles with fear inside her mind.

The further she delves, the more puzzling things appear, especially after she rises into the Orb of Caprice – a realm of fairies, talking flowers and goblins…and something else, something that lurks in the shadows ready to swallow her whole.

Can she realise in time what it is she must do…or has she left it too late?

Gone is a story inspired by a true event.

Hello everyone. If you haven’t guessed by now I have a passion for words and have thirteen books published in a variety of genres…all thanks to Lulu and Kindle, much hard work and sleepless nights.

My eldest daughter has flown the nest and is married to a man who doesn’t mind his mother-in-law though my son is still fluffing his feathers.

My middle child is off on a mysterious adventure, the like of which I can only guess…and tried to do so in my first book, Gone.

I love to read and am looking for ways to double time so to indulge in the mysterious and wonderful and delicious and strange…my favourite kind of story.

Writing is my passion, though I enjoy creating handcrafted cards, jewellery making, scrapbooking, painting, drawing, 3D art and dabbling in encaustic art whenever I can.

Oh yes, I used to teach or mark exam papers but now concentrate on writing and enjoying my new life, which materialised, as if by a miracle. Though still dislike all those necessary domestic chores that would, for me, be included in the Rings of Hell!

That’s it. Thank you to anyone who reads my books…enjoy the flight!

Please note that the Bestsellerbound Anthology 3 is by various authors with only one story by me as well as in the Murder Madness and Mystery short story collection

My Review:

Gone is one of the most imaginative books I have read in along time. Really reminds me of a darker Brothers Grimm book, not fit for children but teens and adults only.

Its got the Alice and Wonderland vibe going on but a bit more mature and creepy to some extent. Fun And Games which are characters in the book are kinda cute so you are lead to believe at first. They remind me of Tweedle Dee and Tweedel Dumb in the old fairy tales but evil as you find out later.

Charlie is a character you can connect with to some extent and she really thinks she is loosing her mind, she just can’t grasp the concept that she is in another place…is she dead or is she somewhere in between? even she can’t decide. As she floating above her body I think that might have been a clue but she still thinks she may be dreaming. Then she is thrown into various places and goes through various trials I would call them and she even meets her daughter Jen that is still back in acoma from a injury that occurred when she was very young. so when they meet again she is still thinking she is crazy. Her daughter is grown into a teenager at this point and now Charlie is grasping the idea that she is dead and she is with her daughter bit how can that be when her daughter is not dead?

Jen leads her through various things to try and make Charlie understand what is going on but to some extent Charlie still thinks she is going crazy after all her lif e is  nothing but stress and she figured soon enough she would end up crazy and in some insane asylum.

Well now she has to make a choice and the trials that she goes through that she actually choses but on some level doesn’t think she is but realizes in the end she did make all these choices which leads her to make the right choice.  which would be to move on or to go back and live her life out without Jen, after all jen needs to move on too. she has been stuck here all these years , yes her body may still be on earth but her soul has let her body long ago which is another factor to what Charlie can’t fathom, someone else had raised her daughter in another world, dimension whatever you wat ot call it.

But it hurts Charlie knowing htat she should have been the one ot do all these things, to comfort her daughter when it was needed and for her to grow with her, after all she is her mother she I s the one who brought her into this world only to have a short time with her and never see her grown up and now she is grown up to a teenager and Charlie had missed all this and regrets its all. She wants to stay with her daughter where it is peaceful , comforting and she has no more worries or to be afraid of anything anymore which fear is one of her biggest problems but Jen is here to help her to overcome fear, regret and anything else that she may have been feeling the entire time that her daughter has been in a comma . Charlie has a lot to learn and a lot to accomplish to get out of this  place or to move on to another, better place and her daughter needs and wants to move on also so Charlie has a lot of decisions to make while she is on this other plane.

As Charlie takes these trials  she learns so much, that she is not the weak person, scared and afraid all the time, worrying about everything and always stressed out, she learns to trust her instincts and become strong as Fun and Games tempt her to just end I all and make her believe that they will lead her to that better afterlife. but will they?

So read this book find out the truth, even with all my spoilers I haven’t told you the half of it.

I really enjoyed the book, like I said its very imaginative and well written. Makes you think and maybe a bit far fetched but it still leads you to wonder, makes you question things , something ot think about well after you are done reading the book.

The only thing I didn’t really like about the book was the ending, I think a few things could have been explained a bit better, I mean for all the detail she puts into the story throughout the book she could have very well added more detail to the end, did Charlie have a heart attack, we are lead to believe this, did she die and for how long or was it some kind of a dream, a vision perhaps that she saw while she was out, was she in a comma herself for a short period of time but lucky came out of it unlike her daughter? I think their are some unanswered questions but none the less it is still a intriguing book that I found myself not putting down for long periods of time, wanting to know what will happen next, what will become of Charlie and her daughter, but this we do find out. That is another thing. Charlie wakes up to her husband we assume in  the hospital and Jen has already passes away. I think their may or should have been a part that Charlie has a funeral even thought she has basically kept his from everyone but some kind of closure even thought she was with her in the otherworld, which they actually call earth there. anything could have been added to the end. The book as I said has so much detail but not overly until you come to the end then it seems rushed to end. A few more pages wouldn’t have hurt.

But all in all it is a good book I give it a 4 star . Julie definitely has a talent for writing. I can’t wait ot see what she comes up with next!

I was given this book for review .
